Seeker of Magnificent Peace…

…is what you are, they said, with eyes upward, always
searching the sky for answers, connections
as if they were written in the space between clouds
you peel back the pages of unassuming novels
and whisper sentences aloud
while divinity falls from the pages
you can’t help but hear the silence between spoken word
peering between the eyes of the same, the other
suddenly finding presence in a habitual day
presence that wakes you up like cold water
you swallow the steady tones of your yoga teacher’s chant
“open your crown chakra,
see the barriers fall between you and the divine
you are connected to the wisdom of the universe”
inhale, exhale
never stop seeking

every thought becomes caught
on the next in my mind
it’s a web chasing time
in a tangle of silk
that falls from my grip
gently tugging at reality
the outline catches light
and a path intercepts
only to be swept away
by tessellations of sound
and thoughts that surround
thoughts of what should be
but what about me?

I wish that life’s answers
Would fall to you like rain
And you could catch them in your hand
And never doubt again.

I find hope at the bottom of drawers
caught between pages
stuck together by time
written in a hurried hand
rushed ink that speaks
meaning from years ago
still waiting on wilted pages
for an ear to listen
calling from its home
to be lifted from those pages
The Crane

Like a wind silently sweeping by
it travels often unseen, rushing past
normalcy, stirring the forest air beneath
its wings, a blur of cobalt, and then nothing
remains, but it is still very clear, an imprint
in my mind, and I often search the skies, hoping
its silvery crescent shape will glide over me
carrying serenity with it, I can remember the words
spoken the last day it was seen
when that majestic bird, looking out of place
where it perched, perfectly centered under an arch
of trees, but among conifers, plain and green,
it’s exotic beak just didn’t belong
we stared and warmed and felt it,
hope floating from a tree branch far above
the present calm settling on our shoulders
as it lifted a leg and turned its head, taking flight
“Cranes are good luck, you know.”
That was all we needed to hear.

Greet each morning
with a joyful heart
and eyes that see
not the crumbling
structures, the imperfect
minds, the shadowed
corners of misgiving,
but that are brave enough
to look at such things
and instead capture
the light, the beauty
the elusive joy that dares
to appear, but only to the eyes
that have the courage
to see it.

If hope is a thing with feathers
like birds that flock together
then is faith a thing with wings
supporting those clinging dreams?
The Perplexity of Belief

doubt
is your greatest friend
for when it sits
most defiantly
atop your most wonderfully
abstract, eternally
perennial dreams, it awakens
you, and urges
your eyes open,
and your mind
to thoughtfully examine
the pathways of a
cerebrum bound
with skepticism,
to discern
its motives and
to choose
your own credence:
either accept its resting
place, among your
assumptions,
your ambitions
your reveries,
or rather,
awaken it quickly
release it somewhere
safely distant,
and instead,
choose to
believe.
